Overview Of West MarinThe Valley |

|
Just over the hill from Fairfax on Sir Frances Drake Boulevard as you round the corner on White's Hill you'll leave the suburbs behind. The open hills of the San Geronimo Valley stretch out before you. Though only seven miles from Highway 101, the valleys of West Marin are a peaceful change from the busy, suburban towns of East Marin. As the road levels, the first sign pointing left is to the town of Woodacre, which features a mix of newer and older homes. Similarly, the populace of the town is a mix of established families, blue-collar workers and professionals. Further on Sir Frances Drake is the tiny town of San Geronimo, home of the San Geronimo Golf Club. At the corner of the golf course, Nicasio Valley Road intersects Sir Francis Drake and leads north toward the town of Nicasio, the geographic center of Marin County. This road takes you north through ranchland and redwood trees to the town's charming center.
But if you continue west on Sir Frances Drake another mile you will find the town of Forest Knolls, quickly followed by the community of Lagunitas. Just past St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Lagunitas the road becomes shaded by thick stands of redwood trees and lush ferns. Less than a mile past Lagunitas, a sign welcomes you to Samuel P. Taylor State Park. Continue on Sir Frances Drake Boulevard through the park. You will then leave behind the thick forests and wind through the open hills, connecting with Highway 1 at the town of Olema.
